Lo scenario si divide tra Parma e la riviera adriatica. La protagonista è Aida (Claudia Cardinale), aspirante attrice sedotta e abbandonata da un casanova di Riccione, Marcello (Corrado Pani). La sua vittima è Lorenzo (Jacques Perrin), fratello sedicenne di Marcello, ingenuo e romantico, innamoratosi perdutamente di lei. La voce della coscienza è don Pietro (Romolo Valli), che cercherà d’indurre Aida a più miti consigli. Splendido melodramma verdiano, è uno dei film più belli e famosi di Zurlini e contiene forse la più grande interpretazione della carriera di Claudia Cardinale.
