Il regista Alexander Payne ambienta Downsizing nella sua città natale, Omaha, in Nebraska. In un futuro non molto lontano, gli esseri umani sperimentano una soluzione inedita all'eccessivo consumo energetico che ha impoverito il pianeta: una procedura di rimpicciolimento all'avanguardia in grado di ridurre temporaneamente le dimensioni di un uomo di circa un ottavo, permettendogli così di risparmiare le risorse a disposizione. Una coppia di sposi (Matt Damon e Kristen Wiig), in crisi coniugale, decide di sottoporsi al processo con la speranza di una vita migliore, ma quando sua moglie si tira indietro all'ultimo momento, all'uomo non resta che unirsi a una piccola comunità di suoi simili e affrontare da solo le difficoltà che derivano dalle nuove misure ridotte.
