La tela dell'assassino, il film diretto da Philip Kaufman, vede protagonista la giovane detective Jessica Shepard (Ashley Judd).
Tra i suoi colleghi del dipartimento di polizia di San Francisco nota per essere una tipa tosta. Jessica, ossessionata dal passato del serial killer di suo padre, non mostra alcun sentimentalismo, n nel suo lavoro n nei suoi rapporti con gli uomini.
Il suo mentore John Mills (Samuel L. Jackson) orgoglioso di Jessica come un padre sarebbe di sua figlia. Promossa da poco alla sezione omicidi, insieme al suo partner Mike Delmarco (Andy Garcia), la donna sta indagando sul primo caso che le stato affidato: arrivata sul luogo del delitto, Jessica scopre che l'uomo brutalmente assassinato un suo ex amante di una notte. Seguono una serie di omicidi in cui le vittime risultano essere altri suoi partner occasionali. Come se non bastasse, la poliziotta si rende conto di cadere vittima di improvvisi blackout mentali proprio in coincidenza degli omicidi. Comincia, cos , a sospettare di se stessa.
