È il terzo capitolo di quella che Pasolini chiamava la "trilogia della vita" in contrapposto a quella sulla morte che aveva in mente (ma di cui fu realizzato solo il primo segmento, Salò). Dopo Boccaccio e Geoffrey Chaucer, qui il regista friulano attinge alla novellistica orientale. Pasolini ha abolito il filo conduttore delle Mille e una notte, cioè l'intervento della bella Sheherazade in veste di narratrice, ma ha serbato alcuni celebri episodi. Il fiore delle mille e una notte è forse il più prodigo di belle immagini dei film di Pasolini, ma è anche quello più almanaccato e freddo. Eppoi il vezzo di far parlare in dialetto i personaggi popolari, si rivela qui un espediente per far colore, privo di un autentico significato
