Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), un giovane fotografo e artista afro-americano di New York, accetta di conoscere i genitori della sua fidanzata bianca Rose (Allison Williams), durante un weekend fuori città nella loro tenuta di famiglia. I genitori della ragazza Missy e Dean (Catherine Keener e Bradley Whitford) e il fratello minore Jeremy (Caleb Landry Jones) si dimostrano fin da subito gentili e accomodanti, forse per dissimulare l'imbarazzo generato dal rapporto interraziale della figlia. Alcuni eventi e scoperte sempre più inquietanti, il comportamento enigmatico dei domestici afro-americani, la donna di servizio Georgina (Betty Gabriel) e il giardiniere della proprietà Walter (Marcus Henderson), e in seguito la scoperta delle sparizioni di alcuni ragazzi di colore avvenute nella zona, non fanno che aumentare il sospetto di Chris che in quella casa niente sia come sembri lo portano ad una verità che non avrebbe mai potuto immaginare. Come se questo non bastasse, il suo unico possibile alleato, l'amico Rod (Lil Rel Howery) è molto molto lontano.
