Tony D'amato (Pacino) allenatore di football americano, viene ritenuto ormai al tramonto. La nuova "boss" della dirigenza (Diaz) vorrebbe mandarlo via, ma non è facile, perchè Toni è molto amato dalla squadra. Entriamo così in quel mondo: la violenza nel campo, le ambizioni e le crisi dei giocatori, gli intrighi di tutti. Alla fine vince Pacino - anche perché la squadra continua a vincere - e non trascura di prendersi la sua vendetta finale. Il solito ultimo, e penultimo, Stone: non può che affidarsi alla forma e al linguaggio, coi quali riesce ancora, parzialmente, a nascondere la scarsa ispirazione. Il film è comunque aggressivo e spettacolare e tutti quei divi, aiutano.
