All'inizio degli anni 70 in America Larry Flynt gestisce alcuni anonimi locali di spogliarello che faticano ad andare avanti. Quando un giorno ha l'idea di trasferire la sua attività su una rivista, la sua vita cambia di colpo. Dopo i primi periodi di incertezza e difficoltà, il giornale mensile, chiamato Hustler, comincia a vendere un numero sempre maggiore di copie e Larry diventa sempre più ricco, dando vita ad un vero e proprio impero editoriale. A metà tra erotismo e pornografia, la rivista arriva su tutto il territorio nazionale, ma quando Larry decide di trasferire a Cincinnati il quartiere generale della casa editrice, la cosa viene presa come un affronto da due eminenti personalità locali, che cominciano una battaglia con l'editore. Nel 1976, Flynt viene arrestato per oscenità, evitato da tutte le forze politiche e indicato come persona pericolosa, anche a motivo del suo matrimonio con Althea Leasure, già spogliarellista ora dedita alla droga. Solo il giovane avvocato Isaacman accetta di difenderlo nei vari processi che si susseguono a ritmo crescente.
