Jeffrey Wigand (Russell Crowe) lavora come capo ricercatore e dirigente alla Brown & Williamson, azienda produttrice di tabacco. Quando decide di non poter più rimanere in silenzio di fronte alle manipolazioni cui assiste, Jeffrey viene messo di fronte ad una situazione irreversibile: o si adegua e resta o perde il posto. Licenziato, Jeffrey diventa il testimone chiave nella causa che lo stato del Mississippi ed altri 49 Stati intentano contro l'industria del tabacco. Tutto questo viene pagato a caro prezzo così Jeffrey prende contatti con Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino), un giornalista della CBS. Lowell decide di combattere questa battaglia a fianco di Jeffrey e lo convince a registrare una intervista verità all'interno della trasmissione di grande ascolto '60 minuti'. Qui Jeffrey fa dichiarazioni piuttosto compromettenti.
