Mike Banning inizia a sentire il peso degli anni e gli acciacchi delle molte concussioni subite nella sua carriera di salvatore di Presidenti degli Stati Uniti. Ma questo è un lavoro che non conosce soste e così, proprio mentre gli sta venendo offerto un più tranquillo incarico d'alta responsabilità, ecco che uno stormo di droni esplosivi scende in picchiata sul Presidente in vacanza di pesca al lago. Il capo di Stato finisce in coma e Banning si ritrova incastrato come capro espiatorio per la congiura. In fuga sia dai cospiratori che vogliono metterlo a tacere, sia dall'FBI che lo ritiene colpevole, non ha che una persona a cui chiedere aiuto: suo padre, survivalista armato pesantemente che fa l'eremita paranoico tra i boschi e disprezza la tecnologia informatica.
