Il piccolo Remi vive in campagna insieme alla madre, la signora Barberin, mentre il padre Gerolamo lavora lontano come tagliapietre. Quando Gerolamo si ferisce in un incidente la madre si trova costretta a vendere il loro unico bene, una mucca di nome Rosetta che è anche la migliore amica di Remi, cui il bambino canta una ninna nanna che gli è rimasta nel cuore. È allora che Gerolamo rivela a Remi di non essere il suo vero padre ma di averlo trovato a Parigi, dove era stato abbandonato, e gli comunica che intende portarlo all'orfanotrofio, dato che non può più provvedere a lui.
