A Los Angeles il giovane scienziato Peyton Westlake (Liam Neeson) sta portando a termine con successo una ricerca sulla pelle artificiale. Un giorno la fidanzata, Julie Hastings, affermata avvocato, dimentica nel laboratorio di Peyton un documento estremamente compromettente per uno dei suoi più spregiudicati clienti. Per impadronirsi di quel documento, una banda di criminali irrompe nel laboratorio di Peyton, lo tortura con inaudita ferocia e ne manda a fuoco le sofisticate attrezzature: l'intero stabile è ridotto un cumulo di macerie carbonizzate, ma, incredibilmente, Peyton, orribilmente ustionato e sfigurato, sopravvive. All'ospedale gli assegnano un nome provvisorio, e per risparmiargli inutili sofferenze, date le quasi inesistenti possibilità di sopravvivenza, gli recidono dal cervello il nervo che presiede alla sensibilità. Ma gli effetti collaterali sono terrificanti. Una collera smisurata, associata a una carica sovrumana di violenza consente a Peyton di liberarsi dall'infernale macchina che lo immobilizza e di fuggire dall'ospedale.
