Prima di morire in seguito ad un incidente avvenuto in autostrada, un gangster rivela agli automobilisti accorsi in suo aiuto che in un certo punto della città di Las Vegas è nascosta una grande quantità di denaro, a disposizione di chi la scoverà per primo. I soccorritori, persone qualsiasi ed estranee l'una all'altra, da quel momento sono animati dall'improvvisa brama di impossessarsi del tesoro. Nasce così una gara di velocità senza esclusione di colpi alla quale, man mano, prenderanno parte in modo vario altre persone e persino un insospettabile ispettore di polizia, sedotto dall'idea di compensare l'avara scarsezza della propria imminente pensione con quel provvidenziale mucchio di quattrini.
