Un gruppo di ricercatori, guidati dalla dottoressa Susan McCallister, sta cercando di trovare una cura alla malattia di Alzheimer usando come risorse e cavie i cervelli di alcuni squali mako che tengono in cattività nel loro laboratorio subacqueo. Una sera, mentre stanno eseguendo un'operazione finale, che decreterà se la cura ipotizzata dalla dottoressa Susan possa funzionare, tutto va per il peggio. Lo squalo sul quale stavano operando, si risveglia dall'anestesia riuscendo a scappare.
