Il giovane Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), un orfano londinese che viaggia a bordo dell'immensa macchina mortale, viene scaraventato suo malgrado fuori dal veicolo nel mondo esterno, un luogo ostile e spaventoso che brulica di macchine futuristiche e tecnologie obsolete. Accanto a lui, nel pericoloso viaggio in cerca di un luogo sicuro, la causa di tutti i suoi mali: una ragazzina di nome Hester (Hera Hilmar).
